First foray into video

When I was the sports editor at the Star-News in Wilmington, one skill I picked up was editing video. This was the first video I did from start to finish (filming, interviewing, editing), on a high school swimmer who qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2008.

This was the first, and it turned out to be the only video for me. But the sports department continued to push the envelope with video, having weekly high school highlights, golf lessons and enterprise journalism for site visitors to read AND watch.

Hockey, Southern style

During the 2009 Stanley Cup playoffs, I pitched this story idea to the Newark paper. The Hurricanes were playing the New Jersey Devils, and the idea was to take a look at the scene off the ice. It's a setting unlike any in the NHL, more N.C. State football game than a pro sport.
